Online PhD Course – Module III experimental part: X-ray micro- and nanoimaging for medical and biomedical research
Description of the course This course is an experimental part of cross-disciplinary course “MAX IV/ESS-based imaging for medical and biomedical research”. The main purpose of the course is to educate graduate students on the utilization of X-ray facilities. The course will provide a practical users' guide to planning and conducting microscale imaging and spectroscopy measurements including X-ray fluorescence imaging. Students will conduct a short experiment at MAX IV (NanoMAX) to obtain hands-on experience for using synchrotron source. The hands-on sessions…

Henrik Birkedal obtained his PhD with honors from Université de Lausanne, Switzerland, followed by a postdoc at University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2004, he was awarded a stipend to establish his own research program at Aarhus University where he is now full professor and leads a research group within biological and bioinspired materials. His research interests are diverse and span advanced structural characterization using synchrotron imaging, diffraction, fluorescence and scattering; bone biology; biomineralization; crystallization; bioinspired materials etc. He has…

High content imaging (HCI) involves automated collection and analysis of images to provide quantitative data on a range of functional and morphological changes in cells, spheroids or organoids. It has become a widely used tool in cell biology and drug discovery, for example in screening of drug candidates, fragments, RNAi, miR and phenotypic screens using CRISPR-Cas9, amongst other. This meeting will introduce the power of HCI to new or inexperienced users, but will also cover current HCI case studies from…

The origin of the FOM conference series lies in the three-dimensional imaging capabilities of confocal microscopy, together with the associated 3D image processing. Since then the technology for optical microscopy has progressed with the development of opto-electronic technologies such as femtosecond lasers, nanometric precision scanners and stages, highly sensitive photo-detectors, emergence of new optical approaches and image processing and analysis techniques. The FOM conferences constitute an effective meeting point for developers and users working in this rapidly evolving field, playing…

HALOS Webinar: Sample requirements for time-resolved experiments with biomolecules at European XFEL
Reactions of biological macromolecules span a wide time range, from femtosecond lifetimes of chemical intermediates to seconds or even longer for the overall reaction. The dynamic structures of the short-lived intermediates are extremely difficult to examine, although they are of critical relevance to understand the molecular mechanism at atomic level. To literally see how biomolecules work is therefore an objective for the biology and life science community in general. The strength of the European XFEL is its unique brilliance coupled…
