The expected lifespan is increasing in the western population. Neurodegenerative diseases will therefore affect more and more people. The brain is very well protected against foreign proteins, toxins, bacteria and virus by a very tight blood-brain -barrier. To treat brain disorders, new and effective methods of drug delivery to the brain are therefore needed.
It is generally accepted that receptor mediated transcytosis will be one effective solution to this problem, but the ideal receptor has not been found by now.
Using in vitro models with primary cells in combination with spinning disk, high content screening and other high-end imaging techniques, we are looking different receptors in brain capillaries in order to study their trafficking in detail. If you like to be a part of this team we have several projects for bachelor and master students. Please contact me for further details if you are interested.
