SUMMARY:PhD Course: Introduction to Fluorescence Microscopy August 20-22nd and 27-29th 2018 at Aarhus University
DESCRIPTION:C267/02 Introduction to Fluorescence Microscopy\nECTS: 6.00\nGP: ClinFO\nResponsible: Lene Niemann Nejsum\nSecretary: Annette Madsen\nApplication deadline: 23-7-2018 \nTitle: Introduction to Fluorescence Microscopy \nReg.no.: C267/02 \nis being offered by the Graduate School of Health\, Aarhus University\, fall 2018. \nCriteria for participation: University degree in medicine\, dentistry\, nursing\, or Master’s degree in other fields and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students). \nAim: The aim is to give the participants an overview of basic fluorescence microscopy techniques\, sample preparation\, image acquisition and imaging analysis. \nLearning outcomes: The students should obtain a basic knowledge of different fluorescence microscopy techniques\, sample preparation\, image acquisition and image analysis. This should enable them to prepare their samples for fluorescence microscopy\, choose the appropriate microscope setup for their research purpose\, acquire images and subsequently perform quantitative analyses to generate publication figures\, thus enabling them to participate in research projects involving fluorescence microscopy. \nContent: 1. Overview of basic fluorescence microscopy methods including white light microscopy\, wide-field fluorescence microscopy and confocal microscopy as well as optics\, cameras and photodetectors. 2. Introduction to sample preparation (hands on) of cells and paraffin embedded tissue sections for fluorescence microscopy. 3. Introduction to image analysis using ImageJ Fiji; this includes working with multicolor images\, time-lapse sequences\, background handling and fluorescence quantification (hands on) and 4. Practical demonstration of wide-field fluorescence image acquisition using both an upright microscope and an inverted\, automated microscope as well as spinning disk confocal microscopy (mix of demonstration and hands on). There will be a mandatory home assignment. \nRecommended knowledge for participation (if any): This is an introductory course\, so no experience with fluorescence microscopy is necessary \nLanguage: English \nECTS: 6\,0 \nHead of course: Associate Professor Lene N. Nejsum \nInstructors: Mikkel Roland Holst\, Frédéric H. Login\, Didde Haslund \nNumber of participants: 27 \nDates and times: 20-22 August and 27-29 August 2018 from 8:30 to 17:30 \nPlace: Building: 1240-121 and adjacent laboratory facility\, Wilhelm Meyers Allé 4\, 8000 Aarhus C \nCourse fee: DKK 7200 \nParticipation in the course is without cost for: \n\nPhD students\, Research Year students and Research Honours Programme students from Aarhus University\nPhD students from University of Helsinki\nPhD students from other institutions in the open market agreement for PhD courses\n\nApplication deadline: 23-7-2018 \nApplication: https://service.health.au.dk/modules/Course/mypage/coursecalendar. \n
