SUMMARY:BMB207: Biophotonics
DESCRIPTION:PhD Course in advanced microscopy and Biophotonics at DaMBIC\, University of Southern Denmark. \nPrerequisites:\nBachelor’s degree in biology\, chemistry\, physics\, molecular biology or medicine. \nResponsible teachers:\nJonathan R. Brewer\, Lektor\, Ph.d. \nLearning objectives:\nCourse introduction\nBioimaging plays an important role in modern biosciences not only as a tool for research but also as\na means to improve medical treatments. The main objective of this course is to provide the\ntheoretical basis of bioimaging together with some “hands on” laboratory practice. The goal of the\ncourse is to teach the students general principles of fluorescence and light microscopy as well as to\ndemonstrate principles behind advanced fluorescence and imaging techniques as well as a short\nintroduction to image processing and analysis. There will be practical demonstrations and hands on\nexercises on all topics. The course is a five day intensive course taking place within one week. \nThere will be: \n\nLectures (3 days\, 10 lessons)\nSeminars on application of technique (3 seminars)\nHands on practical exercises\nIndividual experimental projects\nThe students prepare a presentation of the results\nStudents presentations\n\nExpected learning outcome\nAt the end of the course the student should be familiar with: \n\nWide field microscopy\nLaser scanning single-photon confocal microscopy\nTwo-photon microscopy\nSpinning disk confocal microscopy\nFluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS)\nRaster Image Correlation Spectroscopy (RICS)\nAtomic Force microscopy (AFM)\nFluorescent Lifetime Imaging microscopy\nCoherent anti Raman scattering microscopy (CARS)\nImage analysis\n\nEvaluation:\nOral examination\, internal evaluation by teacher on pass/fail basis.\nDate of exam: The ordinary exam takes place at January 27\, 2017 \nTeaching method:\nIntro phase: 12 hours\nSkills training phase: 25 hours\, hereof:\n– Tutorials: 8 hours\n– Laboratory exercises: 17 hours \nLanguage:\nThis course is taught in English. \nRegistration:\nMax. 20 participants\nVia SDU SDU Student Self-Service\nOr contact Vita Solovyeva vita [at] memphys.sdu [dot] dk \n
