BIOPHOTONICS COURSE

 Aim

It is the goal of the course to teach the students general principles of
fluorescence and light microscopy as well as teach principles behind
advanced fluorescence and imaging techniques as well as a short
introduction to image processing. There will be practical demonstrations
and hands on exercises on all topics. The course is a five day
intensive course taking place within one week.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to Identify the “method of choice” for analysis of a given biological sample
  • Give skills to perform image analysis using advanced microscopy instrumentation
  • Give knowledge and understanding of the strengths and limitations of modern techniques in microscopy

 Statement of aims

The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:

  • Understand the basics of microscopy and optical bioimaging.
  • Discuss strengths and limitations of modern techniques in microscopy.
  • Identify the “method of choice” for analysis of a given biological sample
  • Perform image analysis using advanced microscopy instrumentation
  • Present scientific results in an oral seminar given in English
  • Evaluate scientific results in the original research literature

 Content

The following main topics are contained in the course:
  • Wide field microscopy
  • Laser scanning single-photon confocal microscopy
  • Two-photon microscopy
  • Spinning disk confocal microscopy
  • Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS)
  • Raster Image Correlation Spectroscopy (RICS)
  • Fluorescent Lifetime Imaging microscopy (FLIM)
  • kICS/PALM (k‐Space Image Correlation Spectroscopy/ photoactivated localization microscopy)
  • Coherent anti Raman scattering microscopy (CARS)
  • Stimulation emission depletion microscopy (STED)
  • Introduction to image analyses using FIJI and Huygens
